The answer or just another flop?

|

Ham’s new number 12 Ricardo Vaz Te has made an instant impact since joining from Barnsley on deadline day in January.

The former Portuguese under- 21 international was one of three deadline day deals brought in by Gold and Sullivan joining Nicky Maynard and Ravel Morrison as the new boys in the class. Vaz Te burst onto the scene on his full debut against Southampton forcing Kelvin Davis to make a smart stop just 51 seconds into the game. But the former Bolton man struggled in the Cardiff sun on Sunday, so will he be the answer to our winger problems or will he just be a flop?

The winger come striker joined for a little under a million although the full amount is unknown from the Tykes and he had no hesitation joining up with Sam Allardyce again at West Ham. The 25 year old is well known to Big Sam who saw his early development first hand at Bolton. Due to the suspension of Matthew Taylor since joining he has almost played every game possible and has been thrown into the deep end during his early time in the East end.

There is no doubting Ricardo’s pace and flair and it is refreshing to see a player willing to attack the full backs something the Hammers have been missing since Etherington left the club and Matt Taylor’s injuries and suspensions. This left the Hammers one dimensional at times, so Vaz Te gives us an out ball and gives us options.

Vaz Te to me is a confidence player much like Carlton Cole if he is hot he is red hot when he is cold he fears running at players and plays the wrong ball at times. This was in evidence at the weekend against Cardiff where he struggled to find the right pass and he shooting was more reminiscent of a rugby match than a football match.

He has however shown glimpses of what he can do when he is in the mood with skills and flair which bagged him ten goals before even joining the Hammers for Barnsley. He put in a man of the match performance in the away day in Blackpool where he scored and looked lively throughout. It is also refreshing to see a player track back and help the full backs out in a defensive position. Ricardo will run all day for you and it is lovely to see a player with such passion and will power.

So in my opinion Ricardo will prove to be a shrewd buy for this season and could well prove vital in the run in. But the jury remains firmly out whether the Portuguese man will cut in the top league should we get there.

Come on you Irons!
