Who is the right man?

|

With Guy Demel gradually closing in on a return to first-team action…and Joey O’Brien rediscovering his early season form in the glorious win over Millwall…the question will soon be asked: Who should start at right back?

I like many of you I suspect was excited on the final day of the summer transfer window when we signed Guy Demel; granted I didn’t know much about him but the fact that he was an Ivory Coast international filled me with optimism and expectation. African players are typically strong, industrious, physically imposing and great athletes. I consequently pictured Guy bombing up and down the right-hand side and developing a great understanding with Julien Faubert as well as providing an extra attacking dimension.

Unfortunately with his season blighted by injury the role of right-back has been tossed back and forth like a baton between Faubert and Joey O’Brien. However in both their respective positions against Millwall both men arguably put in their best performances of the season. Bearing that in mind Faubert for the remainder of the season should play in a more advanced role; leaving O’Brien and Demel to battle it out for the right-back spot.

Whilst I believe Demel to be the more talented player I think that O’Brien is worthy of a prolonged run in the side. With 17 games to go I’m sure at some point an opportunity will open up for Demel to come in and show what he’s got in his locker; but its already looking like this season is a write off for the Ivorian. Joey must seize this opportunity and maintain the performance level he put in against Millwall. He did start the season in imperious fashion; typified by the goal he got at Watford which he created and made for himself from virtually the half-way line. Laterally he’s gone off the boil culminating in getting sent off against Reading which cost us any chance of getting back into that game.

Hopefully with the impending return of Demel the recent renaissance of O’Brien will continue…though me thinks long term Demel’s our guy.
