The Ides of March

|

With 16 games to go we’re tentatively clinging onto top spot as the chasing pack stalks us at every turn; with a mere 6 points the difference between ourselves and Birmingham in 6th.

Things are a little congested to say the least between the top 9 or so clubs as the Championship’s relentless and unforgiving pace goes up a notch or two. In the month of March EIGHT fixtures are to be contested…2 games a week for a month; such a back-log will surely sort the promotion contenders from the mere pretenders.

During this looming mini marathon of March fixtures I’d like to believe that by virtue of having the strongest squad in the league we’ll be best equipped for what essentially will be a war of attrition. The forgotten men of our squad the likes of Sam Baldock, Henri Lansbury and Gary O’Neil not to mention the precocious and raw talent that is Ravel Morrison, will be on-hand to step in as the injuries and suspensions build in such a saturated month of fixtures.

Will our rivals be able to replace quality with quality when we’re in the throes of March? I would suspect not because no other side in this division has the quality and depth that we possess amongst our ranks. Surely March will be our opportunity to pull away from the blood-thirsty pack and establish a tangible gap at the top of the league heading into April.

We should look to March with relish and excitement as apart from Cardiff and Leeds away the other fixtures look relatively kind. It’ll be a great test of the squad assembled by Big Sam and a great opportunity for the aforementioned forgotten men of our season to make an impact as the campaign reaches towards its potentially glorious climax.

There’s only around two and a half months to go in this season’s Championship. The return to the big time we all so desperately crave is looming, these last few weeks will be the ultimate test of our promotion credentials…can we hold our nerve? Is our squad as strong as we believe it to be? The answers to these questions will soon be definitively answered and with those answers…promotion rests.
