Whatever happened to our World Cup Silver Ball winner?

|

Well, in my household he’s very much alive and kicking, seeing as the most recent Fifa game I have on my PC is Fifa 2001, complete with Davor Suker in the Hammers starting line up. But what’s the real Suker up to these days?

Suker actually joined West Ham in the twilight of his career, having previously made his name at Croatian teams Osijek and Dinamo Zagreb. However, when war broke out in his home country, Suker made the move to La Liga giants Sevilla.

After 5 years – and 76 goals in 153 appearances – Davor made the move to Real Madrid. During his time with Real, he was one of the league’s top scorers and was a factor in them winning the title, the Champion’s League trophy and the Supercup.

Suker led Croatia to a surprising third place finish in the 1998 World Cup, winning the golden boot for the tournament. He also received the silver ball prize for being the second best player in the cup.

In 1999, Suker made the move to the UK and headed for Highbury, playing for Arsenal for a season. But, coming to the end of his career, he made his move to our beloved West Ham United in 2000.

Suker didn’t actually play in the first team that much, but did manage to score against Manchester United in one of his 11 appearances for the Irons. With the departure of Harry Redknapp near the end of the season, Suker made his move to German team 1860 Munich.

Suker lasted 2 seasons in Germany before retiring from football. He has since opened his own football school in Croatia, which has multiple training camps in the country.

And he also seems to be on hand to add comment to a lot of football stories in the media. Maybe something he learnt from ‘Arry Rent-a-quote Redknapp?
