Competition key for run-in

|

Over the past few games, West Ham’s injured players have been making s steady comeback. We are now starting to get our strongest first eleven back in contention, which hasn’t been said for a while.

Winston Reid, Gary O’Neil and Henri Lansbury all returned for the New Year’s Eve defeat to Derby County. Kevin Nolan, George McCartney, Julien Faubert and Jack Collison all returned from suspension for the win against Coventry City. We are slowly but surely getting our squad all back together which will be vital for the remaining games of the season.

There are still a few players out with injury though. Abdoulaye Faye, Matty Taylor and Guy Demel are still out plus players like O’Neil, Lansbury and Reid have only just returned from injury so are not quite 100% match fit.

Competition for places is vital for any squad, let alone one that is vying for promotion. In the last few weeks Sam Allardyce has been picking squads on who is fit, not on merit, simply because the squad was decimated by injuries. If you look at the Derby defeat, Sam had to play O’Neil and Lansbury even though they were not in peak condition.

If you look at the substitutes bench there were five forwards sitting next to Sam, which is not good. Yes, there were suspensions at the time of the game but having five forwards on the bench shows the squad had a lot of injuries.

Now that the injured players are coming back, a couple of additions in January will really help the team in the second half of the season.
