George McCartney has so far been one of Big Sam’s more impressive summer signings. With his strong attacking displays down the left hand side partnered with assured defending and great vision across the pitch, the defender has proved to be a vital part of the team.

Against Brighton the Sunderland loanee proved his worth by keeping a very impressive attacking force at bay. McCartney was heavily involved in the action with crossing the ball in for the attackers and then making vital tackles and blocks in defence.
When the former full-time West Ham man was with us he was a key part of the starting 11. Although the season is just over a quarter of the way through and the former Northern Ireland defender is back with us for the whole season, what is next for McCartney? I personally believe that whether we get promoted or not it would be a wise choice for him to rejoin the Hammers as he gets first team football and is popular amongst the fans. The former Leeds United man will help implement the attacking football that West Ham can play by building from the back. He has already done a huge job for us this season in the small amount of games that he has played.
With McCartney’s adaptable play and his ability to play with different players along the back I believe that he will be a crucial part of the team this season and it would be fantastic to see him back as a full time Iron.
