Ladies miss out on top spot with draw

Jenny Kerwood gives you the weekly update on how the West Ham Ladies are doing in their push for promotion.

West Ham Ladies missed the chance to go top of the FA Women’s Premier League South Division when they could only draw with mid-table Gillingham Ladies on Sunday.

The Hammers were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw away at Gillingham, where both teams had chances but West Ham eventually had to settle for just a draw. West Ham created enough chances to win the game with Gemma Shepherd, Stacey Little and Kelley Blanchflower all going close whilst Hammers’ goalkeeper Nikki Duncan made some good saves to keep the home side at bay.

The point sees West Ham stay in second place, two points off Brighton & Hove Albion Ladies whilst Portsmouth Ladies trail West Ham by a point in third (but with a game in hand on their rivals). Whilst it may have been disappointing not to pick up all three points, the draw keeps the Hammers in a good position to keep pushing the leaders well into the winter period and hopefully beyond.

West Ham now have two tough home games coming up next in the league. Firstly they face Colchester United Ladies who currently sit 5th in the table and then they welcome Tottenham Hotspur Ladies who are only one point behind West Ham in 4th. Whilst these may be tough games on paper, West Ham will be hoping to take full advantage of two home games on the bounce and hopefully gain maximum points in their push for promotion this season.

Elsewhere in the division former leaders Portsmouth Ladies’ game with Queens Park Rangers Ladies was postponed, which gave Brighton the opportunity to snatch top spot with their 2-1 win over bottom club Millwall Lionesses. West Ham’s next two opponents, Colchester and Tottenham also both won away from home, beating Plymouth Argyle Ladies 2-1 and Keynsham Town Ladies 1-0 respectively.
