Who will be the Hammers best bit of business?

|

Twelve new players have arrived on the Eas End, and the push back to the Premiership can take centre stage.  All the experts opinions suggested the Hammers would have a great window, bringing in players in needed positions, and finding talented players. The question now is who will be the best/most important signing of this whole transfer window.

Kevin Nolan- So for £4 Million, West Ham went out and not only go a proven Premier League goal scorer (12 last year) but also got it’s next captain as well? I don’t think the club could have agreed to this deal fast enough. His goal scoring ability speaks for itself, but it’s his leadership that makes this worth it. The club under the captaincy of Upson Just didn’t seem to gel. Through the first few matches the squad already seems better in that department. With Parker gone he steps in as “The Guy” in midfield. An excellent piece of business by this club.

Matt Taylor- Another good signing that helps widen the pitch. West Ham played so narrow last year, that the other club could have not fielded right and left backs and still been able to win. He brings good skill at free kicks and corners, which the hammers lack since the departure of Diamanti.

John Carew- Brought in on a free transfer, and look forward to see what the former Villa man brings. He adds depth and has had a decent Premier League career. He is similar to Cole in that he is a target man. So I doubt you will see them both on the pitch at the same time. He might start a few here and there but I mainly see him as a bench player for now, but he was a free pick up so any goals he scores is a good return on the investment.

Joey O’Brien- The natural right back the club has been desperately looking for going on two years now. He keeps Faubert from playing out of position and he can get forward. He already has a goal this season while playing right back.

Abdoulaye Faye- The former Stoke City defender was brought in as much needed experience and depth at central defender. He is an off the bench guy, behind Tompkins and Reid. However, will start from time to time.

Sam Baldock- High expectations for the former MK Dons ace. Scored 6 goals in 6 games before he switched to Upton Park. Hopefully will form a good partnership with Cole. Time will tell weather he is the forward the club has been searching for.

Papa Bouba Diop- The former Fulham midfielder signed on a free after being released by Greek club AEK Athens. The massive 6’5″ Senegal international will be key on set plays on both offense and defense. Expect a few headers from him to find the net. Has a decent goal record for his career.

Guy Demel- Can play anywhere on the right side or fill in at central defender if needed. Has come over after 10 years in the Bundesliga. Capped by Ivory Coast during this past World Cup. Helps provide depth for a number of positions.

Brian Montenegro- (Loan)- Capped at the U-20 level for Paraguay. Just acquired a Italian passport which made his move to the east end possible. Has blistering pace and can come in against tired defenses and keep them on their heels. Look for permanent deal if he proves his worth.

George McCartney-(loan)- The X factor. He keeps Illunga off the field which makes everyone happy. Having played here before he knows what it takes to wear the claret and blue. He left under weird circumstances, but is welcomed back with open arms. His experience is big for the back four.

David Bentley-(loan)- The £15 million dollar man. Here on loan as part of the Scott Parker deal. Has a great chance to prove all of his critics wrong. He is determined which bodes well for the Hammers. Another winger who can take the play out wide. Good at crosses and corners will be a great addition.

Henri Lansbury-(loan)- Very excited to see the English U-21 player in action. Scored 2 goals in last international match, and assisted on 2 others. Can be a good bench player, or may even challenge for a starting spot. Hammers have option to buy if he performs well while on loan. Expect a few goals by him this season.

Now it’s difficult to say who will be the best or who will be the most important. The best overall player the club acquired was by far Nolan, and you can make the case he is the most important as well because he is the skipper too. However, with the glaring weakness the squad had, I believe McCartney will be the most important pick up. It was just awful to see how bad Illunga was costing this club points in the standings. McCartney is a 100% better and provides leadership on a young defensive four. We shall see what the season brings. Overall great haul in the transfer window. COYI!!!
