Championship versus Premier League

Is this West Ham squad really better than last season’s? Our writer Brad Pinard will let you know.

Disappointment was a buzz word around Upton Park last season during many horrid home performances with a lack of effort and class combined. However the 2011-2012 season has a glow of optimism, after just one defeat in six games, with the club already boasting the highest goal difference in the division and three wins from three on the road it’s not hard to see why.

I completely understand that West Ham will be playing lesser opposition this season but player for player I feel that the Hammers current squad is better than last years.

With a shocking defensive record last time out, Sam Allardyce has had to totally reform the back line and has hung on to dependable Robert Green until January at least. Green has been protected well so far this season by the fast improving pair Winston Reid and James Tomkins at the heart of the defence. Compared to the slow, unfit Mathew Upson and the erratic style of Danny Gabbidon it has given some defensive insurance and a noticeable threat from attacking set-pieces. Free signing Joey O’Brien from Bolton has also impressed thus far and with deadline day signing Guy Demel now available, the problem right back position looks to be covered. After a successful first spell at the club, fans favourite George McCartney has joined on loan to fill as a dependable, consistent left back.

The midfield is the area that West Ham are most improved with the additions of Kevin Nolan, David Bentley, Henri Lansbury and Matty Taylor. Scott Parker may have left Upton Park but with the Premier League quality replacements there is a fantastic strength in depth, plus incredible delivery from both wings which has not been available for the East End club for many years. With a fully fit Jack Collison and an eager Mark Noble still in the squad the choice that ‘Big Sam’ has to make for them four or five positions in the middle of the park is a tough one.

The Hammers did not score anywhere near enough goals last season at home or away but have found some early season form in front of goal scoring 15 goals in six games including hitting four twice on the road at Watford and Nottingham Forest. Allardyce rejected a late bid from Galatasaray for Carlton Cole at the weekend after he impressed the Turkish giants with his sharp start the season scoring four goals in six games. The additions of pacey Sam Baldock and experienced John Carew to Cole and Frederick Piquionne, easily make this four man attack one of the best outside the Premier League.

As a squad, this new look Allardyce side has got everything at its disposal to mount a strong promotion charge and I feel this side is far superior to the shambles that turned out last year.
