West Ham have made a bid to sign Cameroonian defender Nicolas N’Koulou on a free transfer, according to reports.

The Marseille defender’s current deal expires on June 30 and it is widely anticipated that the talented 26-year-old will depart the club as Marseille cannot afford to keep hold of N’Koulou.

With James Tomkins continuously linked with a move away from West Ham, the Hammers will be looking to bring in a worthy replacement this summer if the Basildon-born player leaves the club.

N’Koulou had been linked with a move to Espanyol but it now looks as if the Hammers are ready to move for the talented African.

A product of the same academy that produced Samuel Eto’o, N’Koulou is a defender that can bring the ball out from the back and embrace the entertaining style Slaven Bilic is implementing at West Ham.

The Hammers have been in negotiations with Marseille already this summer as they try and land their prized asset Michy Batshuayi. Crystal Palace have had a €38m bid accepted for the Belgian and it could force West Ham to table a similar offer if they are to have any chance of signing the 22-year-old.
