According to German publication BILD, West Ham United will compete with Manchester United to secure the signature of VfB Stuttgart’s star striker Serhou Guirassy this summer.
West Ham are having a season of ups and downs, and with injury issues and poor performances piling up in recent months, it has not been the happiest start to a year for the supporters in Claret and Blue.
However, David Moyes will be feeling relieved as the Hammers finally broke their eight-game winless run on Monday night when they put on a confident and resilient display against Brentford in front of the home fans, but there will be high expectations to secure a consecutive victory when the side travel to Everton this weekend.
There are still opportunities for Moyes to turn the season around with the Europa League still a huge part of West Ham’s campaign and the chance to earn a finish in the Premier League table that would lead to European qualification next season.
In terms of next season, the future of the squad and the manager is definitely hanging in the balance at the moment as the inconsistent performances on the pitch has caused concern about whether they can still compete with Moyes’ in the driving seat and what needs to be done in the transfer market.
Now the East London is being linked once again to VfB Stuttgart goal machine Serhou Guirassy, but it is claimed by popular German news outlet BILD that they will need to keep with Manchester United for the striker’s signature this summer.
Should West Ham sign Serhou Guirassy?
There is no doubt that signing a prolific centre forward will be absolutely imperative for West Ham this summer if they want to improve their attacking presence in the Premier League and cup competitions.
All-time top-scorer Michail Antonio will be out of contract this summer and at 33 years old should not be considered a long-term solution for the centre-forward role, whether the club decides to extend that or not.
Over 17 Bundesliga appearances, Guirassy has scored 18 goals, registered one assist and created seven big chances, as well as averaging 1.7 key passes, 4.8 duels won and 3.2 shots on goal per game, as per SofaScore.
To put the 27-year-old’s output into context, he would be the highest scoring player in the Premier League this season so far, surpassing Erling Haaland (17) and Mohamed Salah (15).
It won’t be easy for West Ham to compete with the financial perks that a giant club like Man United can offer Guirassy, but they can offer something much more valuable and that is game time.
Rasmus Hojlund already leads the line at Old Trafford and was a significant investment for the Manchester outfit, so it is highly unlikely they will stump his development and growth in the starting eleven by starting Guirassy consistently, something that would not be a problem for West Ham.
With that being said, it will be interesting to see if West Ham put in an offer for the striker this summer and whether they will be able to offer what the player is looking for to leave Germany.
