The Athletic’s dedicated West Ham United journalist Roshane Thomas has issued an update on Fabian Balbuena and his future at the London Stadium.

Thomas made an appearance on the latest episode of the U Irons podcast following the Hammers’ 3-3 thriller against Arsenal in the Premier League.

The future of the experienced Paraguay international has been in doubt in recent months after his agent went public on the belief that his client would not be playing in claret and blue next season.

Speaking via Versus Radio, the intermediary revealed that there are two or three clubs interested in procuring Balbuena’s services – and he could even move to a rival Premier League club.

Following upon his future, Thomas seemed to hint that Moyes would be non-committal on Balbuena’s future if his footballing heart and mind is set elsewhere.

The West Ham writer said:

“Balbuena – it’s a tough one right now. Because his agent has come out and said all sorts of crazy stuff.

“Like for example, for now, he’s not really a West Ham player. He’s sort of looking to move abroad. So Moyes will have to think about it, I think. Or play someone who’s more committed – someone who wants to be here for the long term.”

Opinion

The ageing Balbuena, who is currently valued at only £4.5m by Transfermarkt, has a contract that runs out in the summer.

Signed for a reported £3.6m fee from the Brazilian top flight, it it hard to see a departure on a free transfer representing a huge void in the club’s finances.

He has played only 12 Premier League games this as per WhoScored, indicating Moyes’ preference to set up with other options.

Considering these factors, Moyes may be of a mind to cut his losses on Balbuena in favour of other choices.
