COMMENTARY

Some West Ham fans took to social media to fume over the treatment of defender Angelo Ogbonna in recent weeks. The 31-year-old centre-back has been an unused substitute in the Hammers’ last three league games after previously playing every minute of the club’s previous eight league matches, and it’s unclear why Manuel Pellegrini has dropped him. Ogbonna had impressed this season as the experienced defender had done his part to make the Hammers solid at the back as he averaged 1.6 tackles and 5.4 clearances per game across his eight league outings (Source: WhoScored). One Hammers fan even pointed out below that the club had conceded way more goals when Ogbonna was missing and even proceded to dub him West Ham’s player of the season so far.  When you consider that, you have to wonder why Ogbonna isn’t being recalled to the starting line-up as clearly he was making some sort of positive difference at the back. Several Hammers supporters below pointed out the centre-back had been unfairly treated and you have to wonder if some of his teammates think the same about his predicament.
