Former England international and Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker has toasted West Ham United for one ‘helluva’ result against Chelsea on Saturday.
The Hammers battled to a tremendous 1-0 victory over Frank Lampard’s side at Stamford Bridge, and Lineker had some kind words for beleaguered manager Manuel Pellegrini.
The win was the east London outfit’s first in eight games in all competitions, and Lineker was clearly pleased for the Chilean after the game.
“One helluva result for @WestHam and Manuel Pellegrini winning start @ChelseaFC,” he wrote on his personal Twitter account.
OPINION
You can see that Lineker was delighted for Pellegrini that he was able to get a much-needed positive result. The West Ham boss is a nice guy, a gentleman, and we all know that. That’s been long established from his time in Spain through to his spell at Manchester City and now West Ham. However, that’s not enough in football. It’s a results-driven business after all, and so he’s was in desperate need of a win at Stamford Bridge. We all know Gareth Southgate is a thoroughly decent man, but if England had crashed out at the group stage of the 2018 World Cup he would have been out on his ear. The same is true of Pellegrini at the London Stadium. Luckily for him, then, he got the win he wanted on Saturday. His team produced a performance that was in stark contrast to the dirge they have produced over the past couple of months. As Lineker says, it was one helluva result for the Hammers.
