Former Chelsea defender Jason Cundy has torn into West Ham United manager Manuel Pellegrini, claiming his days at the club are ‘numbered’.
The Chilean has led the Hammers to a woeful run of form at present, with his team having failed to win in their past seven games in all competitions, and Cundy believes he will go.
“Personally I think his days are numbered,” he said on talkSPORT [11/11; 18:09]. “The results since they got knocked out by Oxford in the League Cup have been atrocious.
“I said at the time that I didn’t see Pellegrini as the manager to move West Ham forward. I thought it was a lazy appointment. He went out to China, and I don’t think he could believe his luck that a Premier League club – and a big Premier League club like West Ham – were prepared to give him an opportunity.”
OPINION
It’s strange that Cundy felt this way about the Pellegrini appointment at the time, but it’s looking like he might have been right. Honestly it looked like a great appointment when the Chilean first got the job. He is a Premier League-winning manager who was excellent over in Spain as well. He was perhaps unfortunate to even lose his job at Manchester City, a victim of the City board getting Pep Guardiola fever. So for Cundy to have this opinion at the time of the appointment is quite impressive, to be honest. However, Pellegrini’s job is starting to look increasingly under threat. He hasn’t been able to solve what has been ailing his team of late, while some of his selection choices this term have been absolutely bizarre. Why has he suddenly dropped Angelo Ogbonna when he’s been the Hammers’ best defender this campaign? Plus, why does he continue to ignore summer signing Albian Ajeti? And why can’t he coax better form out of his players? He certainly has a lot to answer for.
