West Ham United posted a video on its official Twitter account on Tuesday of former Hammers star Dimitri Payet scoring an absolute screamer against Middlesbrough in 2016. This was one of Payet’s most famous strikes for the east London outfit, before his controversial return to Marseille in 2017. Obviously his behaviour in engineering that move back to France has ruined his relationship with some Hammers fans irrevocably, but there are clearly some who would welcome him back to the London Stadium with open arms. There’s no denying that he was a top class talent in a claret and blue shirt. The way that he could get past opposition defenders, as he did for this goal, without relying on any real turn of pace, was exceptional. One supporter compared him to Irons legend Sir Trevor Brooking, and you can see what they mean. It’s all down to intelligence, skill and guile, not some supernatural physical ability.
