OPINION

Ordinarily, a player signing a new deal for a club is cause for celebration. It usually signifies a key talent committing his future to a side, and at the very least it ensures that if he is sold, he won’t be let go for a paltry fee. It is perhaps a little unusual, therefore, to see West Ham fans fume at the decision to hand Aaron Cresswell a new deal that will stretch to 2023, as per the club themselves. Many fans seem to feel as if it is an unjustified contract given a general dip in form in recent times, and that Cresswell is only being rewarded for a run of games in the past few weeks in which he has performed unusually well. Certainly, you would have to say that compared to Arthur Masuaku, he hasn’t been fantastic this season. So far this term he he has a lower Whoscored rating, and has made fewer tackles, interceptions, and clearances per game in the Premier League. Still, the fact remains that Cresswell has been very good in recent weeks, and two goals in three games from left-back is nothing to be sniffed at. Perhaps he shouldn’t be first choice, and at 29 he definitely isn’t the long term future either, but when all is said and done, you could do a awhile lot worse when it comes to squad players.
