OPINION

It’s not been a great start to life in England for Pablo Fornals. The Spaniard has largely found himself on the bench for West Ham in his debut campaign, and when he has featured, he has struggled to make any kind of meaningful impact. Prior to Saturday’s early kick-off against Everton, the 23-year-old has been nowhere near his best for the Hammers and has averaged just 0.6 key passes and 0.5 successful dribbles per game so far this term, as per Whoscored. And that dire form has been reflected in the 6.26 average match rating the has picked up so far this term. By contrast, his form in the U21 European Championships over the summer, in which he averaged a match rating of 7.62 per game, shows just what he is capable of. To an extent, to you have to show patience with a player like Fornals, coming a difficult new division at such a young age, but even taking that into account he has been poor. And he wasn’t much better in the 2-0 defeat against Everton on Saturday. Largely invisible, generally underwhelming, he got it in the neck from many Hammers, and you can understand why. There’s a player in there somewhere, but right now, it’s hard to see where.
