Former England international Danny Mills has gushed over the return to the West Ham United ranks of in-form left back Aaron Cresswell.

Reliable Hammers news source Claret & Hugh reported last week that the former Ipswich Town man is expected to be back for the clash with Sheffield United on Saturday after missing the defeat to Everton last time out.

Sky Sports pundit Mills believes that will be a big boost for them: “Cresswell was out injured for this one. He’s just Mr Consistent at left-back, he’s been superb in that position,” he told Football Insider.

“It’s not really [Arthur] Masuaku’s favourite position and Everton certainly had quality down that right-hand side. They’ll be delighted to get Cresswell back as soon as possible and that might mean Masuaku slides up the field.”

OPINION

There’s no doubt that Cresswell has really rounded back into form for the Hammers, having suffered a downturn for a year or so. Last season wasn’t his best, with him and Masuaku trading places as the starting left back throughout the campaign, but this term has seen both men improve. However, after the latter’s horror show at Goodison Park last season, there’s no doubt that Cresswell is manager Manuel Pellegrini’s preferred choice at the position these days. The statistics show that the England international has really taken a step forward this season. As per WhoScored.com, the 29-year-old is averaging 2.3 tackles, 1.3 interceptions and 1.5 clearances per game. Furthermore, he is averaging 1.3 shots per outing and has scored two very good goals as well. Given how badly Masuaku struggled last weekend, it would be very surprising if it wasn’t Cresswell starting at left back against the Blades on Saturday.
