West Ham United youngster Joe Powell is likely catching Hammers manager Manuel Pellegrini’s eye this season, according to Claret & Hugh.

The reliable Hammers news source claims that the 20-year-old may be the solution to the Irons’ midfield problems, especially after his most recent display.

Powell scored a sensational chipped effort from mid-way through the opposition half in West Ham Under-23s’ 4-0 thumping of their Stoke City counterparts on Monday night.

That was the Englishman’s third goal of the campaign for the young Hammers, and he could soon be knocking on Pellegrini’s door for a first team spot.

OPINION

Powell is certainly one of a coterie of young West Ham players who are surely getting closer and closer to a call-up to Pellegrini’s first team squad. You do wonder if, with the east London outfit amid a terrible run of form where they haven’t won for four games in all competitions, the Chilean may consider turning to some of the stars of this impressive young Hammers team. People like Powell and Nathan Holland surely can’t be too far away from making the step up, especially considering that the likes of Jack Wilshere, Manuel Lanzini, Pablo Fornals and Felipe Anderson have all been underperforming this season. Perhaps the inspiration the Irons needs lies in their talented, in-form youngsters. Holland is the one who generates all the headlines with his prolific goalscoring and flashy style of play, but Powell has been excellent as well this term. Let’s see how long Pellegrini waits before he turns to this fantastic young duo.
