Danny Mills has spoken out on West Ham losing Lukasz Fabianski to injury, comparing the situation to that of Liverpool’s.

The Hammers let former deputy stopper Adrian join the Reds over the summer, and Sky Sports pundit Mills has claimed that they could really use the Spaniard right now after their first choice keeper was ruled out for a significant period of time with a muscle complaint.

Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “If only they had a fantastic backup keeper like Adrian – oh no, wait, he’s at Liverpool, isn’t he?

“Hopefully he’ll be quick very, very quickly. Fingers crossed that he’ll be back for West Ham but that’s what you have to work with, every team has to work with injuries. Look what Liverpool have had to do.

“They’ve lost Alisson, had to tweak the way that they play slightly, it’s part and parcel of football. I’m sure whoever they choose will be an adequate replacement.”

OPINION

West Ham must be kicking themselves at the moment. While Adrian was always unlikely to displace the imperious Fabianski in east London, now that the Pole is out of action, how they must wish that they had somebody of the Spaniard’s capabilities right now. The veteran stopper has been superb for Liverpool in Alisson’s absence, averaging 1.9 saves per game for Jurgen Klopp’s men so far this season, as per Whoscored. Instead, it looks as if Manuel Pellegrini will be forced to turn to Roberto, who joined the Hammers over the summer. That being said, it might not all be doom and gloom with the 33-year-old between the sticks. He hasn’t had the greatest start to life in England, conceding four against Oxford United last week, but during his last full season in a first team, at Malaga in 2017/18, he did average an impressive 2.9 saves per game, as per Whoscored. Maybe he can do an Adrian and catch everybody by surprise.
