OPINION

We all have bad days at the office. Most of us, however, are fortunate enough to not have to perform our jobs in front of 40,000 people and a whole nation of armchair spectators. In that respect, you have to feel a little sorry for Andriy Yarmolenko. The Ukrainian had a night to forget during the 0-0 draw against Aston Villa on Monday, and West Ham fans were quick to give him both barrels on social media. To be fair, you can see why. Yarmolenko missed an awful lot of football last year, but he has now featured in four of West Ham’s five Premier League matches, even scoring on one occasion, and you would like to think that some of the rust that had accumulated over the course of his absence may have dissipated by now. Based on his outing at Villa Park, that might not be the case. There have been flashes of what he is capable of this season, and his average of 1.3 key passes and 1.3 shots per game are certainly nothing to be sniffed at, as per Whoscored, but when all is said and done, he cannot afford to be putting in too many underwhelming performances, especially when you consider the quality of players like Pablo Fornals who are waiting to usurp him.
