West Ham United midfielder Robert Snodgrass could end up retiring as a Hammer, according to Claret & Hugh.

The outlet claims that Irons boss Manuel Pellegrini is a big admirer of the 27-cap Scotland international, which could see him hang up his boots at the London Stadium.

He is currently on a contract until 2021 in east London, with the option to extend his stay for another year, which would take him beyond his 35th birthday.

Claret & Hugh’s report states that the former Hull City midfielder is certainly ahead of Jack Wilshere and Carlos Sanchez in the central midfield pecking order at the club, while rating the chances of January player sales as slim.

OPINION

Snodgrass is 32 years of age now, so you do have to start thinking about these sorts of things. The Scot has been a hugely reliable player for the Hammers since his move from Hull – excepting his year on loan at Aston Villa after a falling out with former manager Slaven Bilic. Pellegrini quickly welcomed him back into the fold and utilised him heavily last season. The player’s versatility certainly helps him, with his ability to operate out on either wing and in central midfield meaning that he’s a valued member of the Hammers squad. From what we’ve seen so far this campaign, you’d have to say that Snodgrass is ahead of Messrs Wilshere and Sanchez, although the latter has been used fairly regularly as a calming late substitute. As for a probable lack of January departures, that makes perfect sense after plenty of player sales this summer. Pellegrini won’t want to stretch his options too thin, and so it would be a surprise to see many, if any, departures come the winter transfer window.
