Declan Rice is a very good defensive midfielder, every West Ham fan will say that and so will most other neutral fans in English football. Rice, 20, earned his fourth England cap on Saturday against Bulgaria and while it was not a poor display by the Hammers enforcer, it was perhaps a match that Gareth Southgate did not need to play him in. Bulgaria are a team that England should be winning against without many problems. While the East European nation are bound to push forward and have the odd chance, playing Rice as well as Jordan Henderson, who has adpoted a more reserved role at Liverpool, is way too conservative. One of Henderson or Rice would have been fine from the off and Southgate should have added more flair and creativity to a midfield three that was perhaps better suited to a game against a nationa that represents a greater attacking risk.
