OPINION

Saturday’s performance against Watford was definitely a long time coming for West Ham United. The Hammers’ defence has looked questionable for quite some time during pre-season and the opening fortnight of the Premier League, and they would have been delighted to have come away from Vicarage Road with a 3-1 victory. One member of the Hammers’ defence on Saturday was Arthur Masuaku and he had been slammed by fans against Brighton in the previous game. However, he was solid down the left-hand side for the majority of the Watford game. The 25-year-old has played his part in trying to repair the Hammers’ defence since replacing Aaron Cresswell from the second game, averaging 3.5 tackles, as well as 2 interceptions and clearances per game according to WhoScored. It was the defender’s positional play that many fans didn’t seem to agree with against Brighton, and despite one fragile moment where Watford nearly scored, Masuaku for the best part was solid in defence for Manuel Pellegrini. Many West Ham fans took to Twitter to voice their opinion on Masuaku, with the majority in awe of the left-back.
