Angelo Ogbonna has never really been a stand-out player for West Ham in his four years at the club, so there were always going to be some fans who are out to get him for his performances. Manuel Pellegrini made an unexpected call to drop Fabian Balbuena and replace him with Ogbonna, 31, alongside Issa Diop in the centre of the defence, and for those fans who prefer the Paraguayan to his Italian team-mate, they were always going to struggle to praise the latter for his display. The £70,000-a-week [Spotrac] defender was torn to shreds by some supporters on Twitter for his performance in the 1-1 draw at Brighton, even though stats by WhoScored suggest that he had quite a decent game. Ogbonna won all three of the tackles he attempted, made seven clearances – more than anyone else on the pitch – and completed 81 per cent of his passes. It was a solid display by the Italian and there’s definitely a chance that he will remain in the starting line-up next week instead of Balbuena. These supporters might need to get used to that.

Our defenders are horrible, especially Ogbonna just garbage

How did we not sell Ogbonna or masuaku this summer? Defensively they are absolutely terrible. Caught out constantly
