Inkersole: Ajeti was frustrating

Football.London journalist Sam Inkersole has delivered his verdict on West Ham new boy Albian Ajeti’s debut for the club, suggesting that the Swiss player was both “frustrating and promising”.

The 22-year-old striker was handed his first minutes in claret and blue during the Hammers’ 2-0 win over League Two Newport County in the Carabao Cup, and Inkersole was quick to comment on a mixed display.

Writing in a piece for Football.London, he said: “Tried his best to get into the game in the first half, showed plenty of running and energy but no chances of note came his way.

“Had a couple of opportunities in the second half both close range headers but one went over and the other, wide.

“Frustrating, but promising nonetheless.”

All in all, not the worst performance from Ajeti. He no doubt would have loved to put one of those headers away for a debut goal, but sometimes you have to be patient and things just don’t quite work out. From his manager’s point of view, the most important thing will be that he lasted the whole 90 minutes, and that he was able to get a full 90 minutes under his belt. The Chilean will believe that the goals will come later, once he is a little more acclimatised to the English game, and with Sebastien Haller opening account at the weekend against Watford, the Irons aren’t too desperate to see Ajeti banging them in just yet. There was always a feeling that the 22-year-old was signed for the future anyway, and on the basis of his mixed display on Tuesday, there is enough in his game to suggest that he can come good in east London.
