Cardoso to sign five-year-deal

|

Goncalo Cardoso is set to sign a five-year-deal at West Ham United ahead of completing his move, according to Football.London.

The online news outlet claim that the 18-year-old is to sign a long-term deal at the London Stadium and a deal could be announced on Tuesday night.

Football.London report that the Hammers have beaten competition from Portuguese giants Benfica and a number of Italian clubs to complete the signing of the highly sought after Boavista enforcer.

Cardoso is set to join the club as a fourth choice defender, with Fabian Balbuena, Issa Diop, and Angelo Ogbonna expected to be above him in Manuel Pellegrini’s pecking order.

OPINION

Pellegrini looks to have sealed a masterstroke with the expected arrival of Cardoso at West Ham. With the five-year-deal supposedly on the table, it appears the Hammers most likely made the best offer to the 18-year-old this summer, especially when you put in the fact that they beat a club like Benfica to his signing. West Ham were desperate for another defender to challenge in the heart of defence after a more than shaky pre-season, with the signature set to make sure defenders like Diop and Balbuena are at the top of their game. The long-term deal will also mean that the Hammers are set to take his valuation through the roof, with the small figure of £2.75million surely set to rise in the coming years. Cardoso made 18 senior appearances despite his youthful age last season, and also starred for Portugal at the under-19’s European Championships, proving good experience for a young player who is surely set for big things next season.
