Cardoso could make debut v Newport

|

West Ham United’s summer signing Goncalo Cardoso could make his debut for the club against Newport County on Tuesday, according to Claret & Hugh.

The reliable Hammers news source claims that the 18-year-old, who was brought in from Portuguese side Boavista earlier this summer, could well feature against the League Two side.

At this moment in time the teenager is considered more likely to feature in the Carabao Cup clash than perpetually injured Irons centre half Winston Reid.

OPINION

This would appear to be the ideal time for Cardoso to make his West Ham debut. He’s only a young lad and is coming in from a foreign league, so you want to ease him into things ideally. That seems to be what Manuel Pellegrini is doing with him, seeing as the youngster hasn’t even made the first team squad for any of the team’s first three Premier League games this season. Newport are a decent enough side, but as a West Ham player you’re never going to get easier opposition for your Hammers debut than a fourth tier side like Newport. We know that these early-round Carabao Cup games usually see plenty of rotation, and Cardoso could well be the beneficiary of that on Tuesday. Reid, though, appears less likely to feature. Clearly he is still having trouble in getting back to full fitness and, considering how long he’s been out injured, it would be bizarre to risk him when he’s not quite back to his best.
