COMMENTARY
Sky Sports reported on Saturday that West Ham had been offered the chance to sign New York Red Bulls defender Aaron Long, and it seems many Hammers fans wanted their club to seize the opportunity to get the 26-year-old. One Hammers fan described Long as being an “absolute baller” while another said “yes please.” Several West Ham fans debated whether Long would be a good or a great signing, which was a positive sign, while others just seemed to get on board with the idea as he could be a replacement for Angelo Ogbonna. It’s no surprise that many Hammers fans were keen on Long as their club’s defence needs strengthening after conceding 55 goals in their 2018/19 league campaign. Long could be the man to do that as he did win MLS defender of the Year in 2018 and on average has won 5.9 aerial duels per game across his 11 league outings this year (Source: WhoScored). This shows that Long is a powerful threat in the air, and could easily help the Hammers be a more solid unit at the back as a result.
