West Ham have not given up in their pursuit of Celta Vigo star Maxi Gomez as they continue to offer a contract deal in excess of what Valencia have tabled for his signature, according to Super Deporte.

The Spanish publication claim that the La Liga side are yet to get the striker to put pen to paper due to a holiday in his native Uruguay but that he is travelling back to Spain to seal a move across Spain’s top flight.

However, it is stated that West Ham, who are said to have seen negotiations fall through due to a failure to agree a payment structure over a release clause in his contract, are still chasing his capture and are trying to tempt the player with an “astronomical” contract offer on Wednesday (10 July) that will blow Valencia out of the water.

The report goes on to say that the Hammers would only be able to sign Gomez if they meet his release clause.

Opinion

This is a transfer saga which refuses to die down – and one which will not until Gomez has put pen to paper at whichever club he ends up at. At the moment, you have to say that Valencia are the front runners for his capture, having agreed a deal with Celta Vigo over a move, but money talks in football. Will Gomez try to force a move to east London thanks to their hefty contract offer? You would imagine that if that were the case, negotiations would still be taking place. Instead, the Hammers’ hopes look all but dead in the water and barring an extraordinary turn of events, they will have to look elsewhere for Marko Arnautovic’s replacement up front. Celta Vigo have played hardball with the Hammers and got a deal which suits them with Valencia. Maybe this is something the Irons can learn from moving forward in the transfer market.
