West Ham have still not given up on signing Celta Vigo forward Maxi Gomez, according to Sky Sports.

The Uruguayan has been heavily linked with a move to the Hammers in recent times, but it had seemed as if they would be beaten to his services by La Liga side Valencia, as reported by the Guardian.

According to Sky, however, the Hammers still retain some hope of hijacking the deal at the last minute, with the report stating that they want to “resurrect” the deal.

OPINION

Surely the ship has sailed on this one. Gomez would have been a fantastic signing for the Hammers, and you have to admire their dedication, but at this stage, they need to give up the ghost and move on. It’s obvious that the forward would prefer to stay in Spain, and the longer the Hammers chase a lost cause, the more time and energy they are wasting on not finding the right man. Somebody like Gomez would be ideal. With 3.8 aerial duels won per match last season, as well as 2.2 shots per game [Whoscored], he is a real handful, and would have been a fine addition. There are other players like him out there though, and accepting that they have missed out on him would not be the be all and end all for the Irons. The sooner they move on, the better.
