West Ham United are, as of Thursday, in talks with the agents of Celta Vigo striker Maxi Gomez, according to Claret & Hugh.

The reliable Hammers news source claims that the east London club are talking with Stellar, one of the biggest representation groups in the world, to secure a deal for the 6ft 1in Uruguayan international [Source: Transfermarkt].

Spanish heavyweights Valencia are thought to be close to completing a deal for the 22-year-old, but the Hammers are confident they can prise the youngster away from them.

There’s a huge determination inside the club to secure the signature of Gomez, who is a player that manager Manuel Pellegrini has watched for months and has his heart set on.

OPINION

This is encouraging news for those of a West Ham perspective. Gomez has clearly been a priority target for a long time now for West Ham. They’ve desperately wanted to sign him and it seems they are close to getting a deal over the line – even if Valencia are as close or even closer to securing their own deal for the Celta star. Obviously if Marko Arnautovic leaves then the Hammers will absolutely have to bring in a proper replacement for the Austrian international up front, and Gomez seems to be the man they want. Pellegrini has his heart set on him and so if director of football Mario Husillos can bag him from under Valencia’s noses then it will represent quite a coup for the Greek. If the club are in talks with the player’s agents then they are clearly making some headway. The important thing will now be agreeing a fee with Celta, but surely the club could just submit the same offer as Valencia have and then get to work with the player.
