The Sun reporter revealed the news on his personal Twitter account on Sunday, claiming that the Latics have got a deal sorted in principle for the former Preston North End man.
However, Nixon claims that the 27-year-old wants a big chunk of change from the Hammers to cover the drop in wages he will receive at the DW Stadium.
The negotiations are said to be ongoing between all the parties involved, but Nixon warns that that cannot be the case for long.
Well, the good thing is that progress seems to be being made in getting rid of Hugill. He’s proved to be a tremendous flop for West Ham and one of the worst things about David Moyes’s underrated time in temporary charge of the club. Clearly the step up to the Premier League has proved too steep for him, but a Championship manager will certainly feel that he can still get the best out of him. He did OK with Middlesbrough last time out, but he didn’t blow anyone’s socks off. However, despite the fee being agreed this is still a deal that is up in the air. That’s because Hugill apparently wants the Hammers to give him a chunk of change to help make up for the drop in wages he will experience with the Latics. It remains to be seen whether West Ham are willing to give him that, but you wonder whether it might be best to bite the bullet and pay what it takes to get rid of a player who is seemingly never going to make the grade at the London Stadium.
