Coventry puts in ‘dominant’ display

|

Conor Coventry put in a “dominant” display for West Ham’s U23 side against Reading on Tuesday, according to reliable source ExWHUemployee.

The Hammers’ youth side continued their unbeaten preseason campaign with a 2-1 win over the Royals, and Coventry was on hand to provide an assist for fellow academy prospect Nathan Holland.

And Ex was quick to point out how much influence he had on proceedings.

Writing on his personal Twitter account, he said: “West Ham Under 23s beat Reading today with Nathan Holland and Anthony Scully scoring!

“Conor Coventry got an assist and put in a very dominant midfield display apparently!”

OPINION

This is just what West Ham supporters will be wanting to hear. There are a number of bright young talents knocking on the door in east London, but Coventry could well prove to be the next one to make that substantial jump up to regular first team action. Unlike some of his peers, the teenager didn’t go out on loan last season, and instead spent the campaign in the Premier League 2. That decision seems to have served him well. He is still yet to make his first team bow for the Irons, but he has already attracted the attention of the Republic of Ireland national team setup, and has been described as a “gem” by The Times. The next logical step is for him to be given a chance to prove himself for the senior side. With Pedro Obiang joining Sassuolo this summer, that chance may be a a very realistic possibility, and at the moment, you wouldn’t bet against the teenager emulating Declan Rice and making good on his promising potential.
