West Ham in shock over Gomez

Manuel Pellegrini and Mario Husillos have been left in shock by their inability to land Maxi Gomez, according to Football.London.

West Ham have been heavily linked with a move for the Celta Vigo striker in recent times, but appear to have lost out in the race for his signature, as reported by the Guardian.

And it is understood that the failure to bring the South American in has left the senior Hammers’ duo planning to regroup instead of launching into a knee-jerk reaction to find a suitable alternative.

OPINION

You can’t blame the Hammers for being just a little bit shell-shocked. For all the world it looked as if they were in the driving seat in the race for Gomez this summer, and Valencia trumping them to his capture has no doubt thrown a significant spanner in the works. You would expect Pellegrini and Husillos to have other targets in mind, but as the transfer deadline approaches and as things being to get more and more fraught, it is easy to envisage a situation in which the Hammers are overcharged for a secondary target. That would be far from ideal, obviously, but at the moment, they need a striker by any means necessary, and if that means forking out a little bit more further down the line, then so be it. You can’t force a player to sign for you, and even though missing out on Gomez is a shame, it could prove to be a blessing in disguise in some respects.
