Valencia have Gomez doubt

Valencia have been unable to finalise their move for West Ham target Maxi Gomez because he has been camping in the Uruguayan wilderness, according to The Sun.

The 22-year-old has been on a retreat in Cerro Catedral region of his home country since his Copa America campaign came to an end.

And it is understood that Valencia, who are in pole position to sign the striker ahead of the Hammers, as reported by the Sun, are worried that he could still change his mind and opt for a move to England.

In theory, this is nice, but the reality is that Gomez isn’t going to have some kind of epiphany out in the South American wilderness and suddenly decide that his future lies in England. You’d love to see it, and there is no doubting that he would be a great fit for the Irons. His 2.2 shots per game and 3.8 aerial duels won mark him out as a real handful [Whoscored], but the fact of the matter is that the boat has long sailed on this one, and the Hammers are going to have to look for alternative targets if they are to bring in the striker that they so desperately need this window. There are options out there, but they won’t come cheap. As far as Gomez is concerned, they need to move on as soon as possible. The longer they dwell, the longer they risk starting the season without a decent front man.
