West Ham striker Javier Hernandez has been “promised” to Mexican side Monterrey, according to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio.

The £140,000-a-week [Spotrac] forward has just been handed the number nine shirt by the Hammers going into the new season, as confirmed by the club, but Di Marzio is of the belief that he could be on his way out of east London.

It is understood that any fee for Hernandez would be around £10.8 million.

OPINION

This surely cannot be true. Why would the Hammers go to the effort of giving Hernandez a new number and everything if all they planned to do was sell him on anyway? A couple of weeks ago, this kind of rumour would have felt a lot more believable, but given Marko Arnautovic’s departure, plus the increasing unlikeliness of the Hammers snapping up Maxi Gomez from Celta Vigo, it is hard to imagine Manuel Pellegrini letting the Mexican go. That being said, he can definitely improve on his performances from last year. Just 1.5 shots per game, and 0.4 key passes [Whoscored] show a player who has some ways to go in terms of his creativity, and were it not for the issues West Ham are having in there recruitment, you wouldn’t have bet against him being given the boot in a different set of circumstances.
