COMMENTARY
The BBC reported that Everton were closing in on signing Andre Gomes from Barcelona and that the club had been confident about getting him this summer after rejecting proposed interest from West Ham. Given that the Hammers seemed to destined to miss out on the 25-year-old midfielder with Gomes close to returning to Goodison Park, but this time on a permanent basis, you’d think fans of the club would be disappointed. However reliable Hammers source ExWHUemployee shared via their personal Twitter account, that the Hammers missed out on Gomes as he wanted to be loyal to the Toffees as they had supported him with some mental health issues and he generally enjoyed his time at the club on loan with them last season. While Gomes, impressed in his 27 leagues appearances for the Toffees in his 2018/19, he averaged a match rating of 6.83 across his outings (Source: WhoScored), some Hammers fans shared they respected his decision to be loyal. In fact one Everton fan who responded to ExWHUemployee’s claim to call Gomes a top player, and was quickly greeted by a West Ham supporter agreeing it was a classy decision and even complimenting the Toffees’ potential bit of business.

Good for him and Everton then. Itβs good to see a club take care of its players and players stay loyal. Sounds like we never really had a chance at him. βββ

Fair play to Gomes. Football is short on loyalty and this is a nice exception.
