Manchester United are a mess of a football club, we all know that. They have slipped into dysfunction and neglect since Sir Alex Ferguson retired.
It’s no surprise, then, that players are wary of moving to Old Trafford. Indeed, The Independent reported recently that West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice does not want to make the switch to what is a toxic environment in the north west.
The Hammers faithful, always paranoid that their best young player will be stolen from them, will likely be blown away by that report. There’s no doubt that the England international is an extremely smart guy who has got his head screwed on correctly.
What this shows is that Rice places his football ahead of financial incentives. Obviously a switch to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team would be hugely lucrative, but the 20-year-old knows he’s embedded in a terrific situation at the London Stadium. He’s the main man and he’s adored by supporters.
In Manchester he’d just be one of the masses, a small part of what is going to be a ginormous rebuilding job at Old Trafford. Plus, there’s no guarantee at the moment that United are going to finish much higher than the Hammers in the years to come.
That may sound ludicrous, but that’s just how things are at the moment,. The Red Devils are in disarray, whereas West Ham look like they’re building something special under Manuel Pellegrini.
It’s no surprise, then, that Rice has given a move to the Theatre of Dreams the cold shoulder. The fact is that that move could turn into a nightmare in no time at all.
