Reid given until January

Winston Reid will be given until January to prove his fitness at West Ham, according to ExWHUemployee.

The £70,000-a-week defender [Spotrac] has endured a torrid spell of injuries in recent times, and did not feature at all for the Hammers last season.

But the New Zealand international will be given until the new year to show Manuel Pellegrini that he can still be of use to the Irons.

Speaking on the West Ham Way, Ex said: “He [Reid] is back for preseason training, he’s going to be given until January to prove his fitness, and then we’ll see from there.”

OPINION

You have to feel for Winston Reid. Once upon a time, not too long ago, he was one of the first names on the team sheet in east London. But football can be a cruel game, and he has had no luck as far as injuries are concerned. The big issue you have is that even if he is able to prove his fitness, he has fallen way down the pecking order. Both Issa Diop and Fabian Balbuena have been exemplary since arriving last summer, and Angelo Ogbonna filled in well when required. The chances are that Reid would be used in a covering capacity, and you have to ask if that would be satisfactory to player or club. From his point of view, if Reid is fit he will want to play, while from West Ham’s perspective they may feel that £70,000-a-week is a lot to be paying for a bit part contributor. There are no assurances of anything just yet, but you can easily foresee a situation in which Reid is shown the exit.
