West Ham United manager Manuel Pellegrini and director of football Mario Husillos are likely to remain patient over transfer target Maxi Gomez, according to Football London journalist Sam Inkersole.

The Hammers reporter believes that the club’s two transfer gurus will probably play a similar game with Gomez to the one they perfected with club record signing Felipe Anderson a year ago.

They are similarly desperate to sign the 6ft 1in Uruguay international [Source: Transfermarkt] as they were to bring the Brazilian to the London Stadium.

The east London outfit have already had a couple of bids rejected for the Celta Vigo striker, as they did for Anderson, but are expected to continue their pursuit of the player.

OPINION

Given all the noises that have come out of West Ham about their interest in Gomez and how much they want him, it’s no surprise that Pellegrini and Husillos would be willing to stay patient and do whatever it takes to bring the Uruguayan to the club. Clearly he is the team’s primary transfer target at this point, but the Hammers will be wary of getting into a bidding war with La Liga giants Valencia – which is what Inkersole believes Celta Vigo want. Obviously the Spanish side want to wring enough money out of Gomez’s sale as they possibly can, and so they should. However, Husillos needs to have a price in his head that he won’t go beyond. Having said that, if he can stay patient and see out the storm of Valencia’s interest then he may be able to secure the striker for a smaller fee than he originally thought possible.
