Maxi Gomez is leaning towards a move to Valencia over West Ham, according to the Daily Mail.

The Hammers and the La Liga side are both understood to have had bids accepted for the 6’1″ Celta Vigo hitman [Transfermarkt].

But the report suggests that the Uruguayan is more inclined to stay in Spain than complete a move to east London.

OPINION

This is a bit of a blow for West Ham, who will certainly be pinning a lot of hopes on bringing in Gomez this summer. The Uruguayan is exactly the kind of player that the Hammers have been crying out for for a long time now. A bullish, bullying centre forward, he is very much cut from the cloth of a traditional hold up man, but the rest of his game is so well-rounded that he justifiably escapes that moniker. To have him at the point of attack, spearheading the Irons while the creative talents around him flitted and buzzed would be fantastic for Manuel Pellegrini’s side. The report would suggest that the Hammers have a bit of ground to make up in the race for Gomez’s signature, but there are always ways and means of doing so. Usually involving shedloads of cash. Only time will tell how this one pans out.
