West Ham United co chairman David Gold has confirmed that young goalkeeper Nathan Trott will be allowed to leave the club on loan this summer.

The 20-year-old is extremely highly rated within the Hammers academy and the plan is obviously for him to get experience of first team football before challenging for the number one shirt at the London Stadium in the future.

Gold confirmed that was the case on Monday: “Just to confirm we have signed goalkeeper David Martin – son of Irons legend Alvin – on a free transfer from Millwall,” he wrote on his personal Twitter account. “His arrival will allow us to send promising youngster, England youth international Nathan Trott, 20, out on loan next season to gain first-team experience.

Meanwhile, the South London Press reported on Monday that London side AFC Wimbledon are interested in bringing the young ‘keeper to Kingsmeadow.

OPINION

This has appeared to be the plan for Trott for a while now, but it’s good to see Gold confirm that the youngster will be sent out on loan ready for next season. He is a phenomenal prospect who is likely going to be first choice at West Ham in the future, but to do that he needs to go out and get experience and games on loan. AFC Wimbledon would be the ideal place for him, wouldn’t it? They just about managed to stay in League One this season and that’s a big plus for the Hammers. League Two probably wouldn’t be testing enough for Trott at this stage, but a stint in the third tier would be fantastic for him. It’s clear that Gold and everyone else at the club view him as the future number one and they’re prioritising his development as a result. Lukasz Fabianski is firmly entrenched as the first choice shot-stopper at the moment, but he’s 34 years of age. Once he begins to go downhill, the Hammers will have Trott ready and raring to go as his replacement.
