ExWHUemployee: Striker is the priority

West Ham will still prioritise signing a forward over the rest of the transfer window, according to reliable source ExWHUemployee.

The Hammers have already brought in two goalkeepers and Spanish midfielder Pablo Fornals this summer, and while Ex concedes that the club could still need another midfielder, he claims a striker is still the number one target.

Speaking on the West Ham Way, he said: “I think we probably need one other defensive midfielder. If we could get a decent loan signing or low priced signing then I would definitely take it.

“Priority has got to be a forward. They cost more and we need a proven one.

“Whatever’s left, another forward and possibly a central midfielder.”

A striker has to be top of Manuel Pellegrini’s wish list for the rest of the summer. Make no mistake, the Chilean has built a really decent looking side in east London, and there is a palpable excitement amongst fans that has perhaps been missing for quite some time, but all of that anticipation will be for nothing if they don’t have somebody to put the ball in the back of the net. Marko Arnautovic currently represents the club’s best forward option, but even he fell away in the second half of last season in the aftermath of his Chinese transfer debacle, averaging just 2.2 shots per game over the course of the last campaign [Whoscored]. It’s important that supporters don’t get too far ahead of themselves going into next term, of course, but you can’t help feeling that the Hammers are on the cusp of really kicking on. The only noticeable missing ingredient is a goalscorer.
