West Ham keen on Portu

|

West Ham are keen on Girona striker Portu, according to Mundo Deportivo.

The forward, full name Cristian Portuguese Manzanera, has hit 1o goals for the La Liga side this season, despite the fact that his club were relegated from the Spanish top flight.

And it is understood that the Hammers could look to capitalise on that situation, although the report does suggest that they could face competition for the 27-year-old from fellow Premier League side Brighton.

OPINION

This probably isn’t the deal that West Ham fans will have been hoping for this summer, but it could still prove to be a very good one nonetheless. The Hammers need strikers, that much is clear, but Portu is perhaps a rung or two beneath the kind of quality that they will have been looking for. That being said, he should be available on the relative cheap, given Girona’s relegation, and if he can replicate the sort of form he has shown in Spain this season, he could be a real hit in England. 10 goals doesn’t seem like an awful lot, but when you consider that Girona only managed 37 in the league in total, it puts into perspective how important he is for a side. Put him in a team with higher quality players, creating chances more regularly, and there is every chance that he could kick on again and be a real star for the Irons.
