West Ham United’s supporters will be hopeful of another big summer of spending as the team look to build on the undoubted progress made under manager Manuel Pellegrini this season.

Key to that is Celta Vigo striker Maxi Gomez, with Football London reporting last month that Hammers director of football Mario Husillos has identified the Uruguayan as a priority signing in the upcoming transfer window.

However, there was consternation amongst the fan base when El Gol Digital claimed last week that Premier League runners up Liverpool had entered the hunt for the 22-year-old.

However, the Hammers faithful will surely be ecstatic to learn that the Reds’ interest in the burly frontman has now cooled, according to the Daily Mail.

That will be music to the supporters’ ears. Gomez has long been a major West Ham transfer target, so the thought of losing him to a team like Liverpool – who don’t even need him – would have been a huge blow.

Obviously if Jurgen Klopp’s team were truly interested in Gomez then he would end up at Anfield, that’s just the reality of things. However, with them out of the picture it would appear that the Hammers are in pole position for the Celta star.

It’s important now that Pellegrini, Husillos and co. get the job done in regards to Gomez. There is much uncertainty surrounding the club’s strikers, from Andy Carroll to Javier Hernandez, and so West Ham will undoubtedly need to bring in a new attacker this summer.

Gomez is clearly their first choice, and now that Liverpool’s interest has cooled it seems as if the way is clear for them to bring him to the London Stadium in a few months time.
