For months now it has appeared that striker Andy Carroll’s departure from West Ham United was inevitable, with his contract set to expire at the end of June.
However, the club could now be set to make a baffling decision on the England international’s future. The Sun reported on Thursday that the Hammers are considering offering Carroll a new contract.
That’s despite the 30-year-old having played just one full game this season, as he’s struggled with continued injury problems yet again. The former Liverpool man is notoriously injury-prone, but yet the club seemingly want to keep him around.
The Sun’s report states that the deal would be structured differently to his current big money contract, but still, is it really worth it? No doubt this is an update that will have West Ham fans scratching their heads.
You have to wonder what the Hammers are thinking here? Carroll, while being a useful player, simply isn’t reliable. He’s played next to no meaningful football over the past few years, so what is the point of keeping him at the club moving forward?
The club have, by all accounts, some ambitious plans for their striking department this summer transfer window, and it’s difficult to see where the Englishman fits in with all that.
You don’t want to deny a player a payday, but it would be bizarre if West Ham end up handing Carroll fresh terms. He’s done nothing to deserve it, let’s be honest. He’s hardly been prolific when he’s been on the pitch, while he doesn’t have the technical ability to make an impact in Manuel Pellegrini’s side.
The Hammers faithful would surely be in uproar if The Sun’s report turns out to be accurate. There simply isn’t any point in keeping the towering frontman around.
