West Ham United revealed on their official Twitter account on Wednesday that right back Pablo Zabaleta will remain at the club until the summer of 2020 after a one year option in his contract was exercised. There’s been a real mixed response to the news from the Hammers faithful, but it’s clear that there are a fair few supporters who are less than impressed with the extension to the Argentine’s deal. To be fair to them, this hasn’t been the finest season of Zabaleta’s career. He has probably played more football this season than Manuel Pellegrini wanted him to at 34 years of age, and his play has undisputedly suffered as a result. Ryan Fredericks is expected to be the first choice right back for the team next campaign, while teenager Ben Johnson is waiting in the wings as a long term solution. With that said, you do wonder whether the club needed to extend Zabaleta’s deal. There’s obviously a few West Ham fans who wished they hadn’t.
