West Ham attacker Samir Nasri is struggling to be fit for Saturday’s clash with Southampton, according to Football London.

The outlet claims that the 31-year-old has suffered three separate calf muscle problems since joining the Hammers in January, with the most recent of those rearing its ugly head again in recent weeks.

He has missed the team’s last three games and hasn’t featured for Manuel Pellegrini’s side since a second half cameo against Huddersfield Town in mid March.

The French attacking midfielder’s chances of earning an extension to the six month contract he signed earlier this year are said to be fading rapidly as a result of those continual injury problems.

OPINION

This is certainly a very worrying situation for Nasri and a bit of a headache for Pellegrini as well. He was counting on his former Manchester City charge to come in and make a big impact in east London, despite coming off a long drugs ban. He took a chance on the Frenchman, but his continued injuries have meant that he will likely have to cast him aside this summer. That’s a shame, but what else can he do at the moment? Nasri has looked decent when he’s played, but he’s barely featured since joining. If a manager can’t rely on you to stay fit then you become useless to him. It’s the same situation Pellegrini has with Andy Carroll. These players might just be injury prone. It’s probably not their fault, but it’s not up to the manager to keep them around out of sentiment either. Simply put, Nasri has to go this summer. He could potentially have had a couple more chances to impress, but not even that looks likely now.
